What is Windshield Skin®?

Windshield Skin® is the original windshield protection product developed that uses a clear, durable film applied to the exterior of the windshield. It is designed to absorb impacts from rocks, gravel, and other debris, helping to prevent chips and cracks. Windshield Skin® protection films are made from high-quality materials and are designed to meet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines.

Who developed windshield protection?

Bray Group International Inc. played a significant role in the development of windshield protection beginning in the year 2004, and presently holds right to the patent for windshield protection in the United States. Their product, Windshield Skin®, was acknowledged with the SEMA Global New Product of the Year award in 2007. Windshield Skin® has been widely adopted by notable entities such as Gillig, New Flyer, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, Walmart Fleet, Pepsi Co. Fleet, and others.

How does windshield protection work?

Windshield Skin® protection films are made from highest-quality materials that are engineered to absorb impacts from rocks, gravel, and other debris. The film is applied to the exterior of the windshield, creating a strong barrier that helps to prevent chips and cracks from forming in your windshield.

Is Windshield Skin® legal?

Windshield Skin® products, when correctly installed on a previously approved windshield, successfully meet the standards outlined in ANSI SAE Z26.1-1996 for standard glazing materials. Furthermore, Bray Windshield Skin material has undergone independent testing and has successfully passed all required ECE R43 tests for the EU. It meets all NHTSA guidelines.

How much does Windshield Skin® cost?

The cost of Windshield Skin® protection varies depending on the material you choose to use. However, this cost can be significantly less than the cost and risk of repairing or replacing a damaged windshield, especially with the technology advancements we see in windshields today. Looking for a professional installation? Visit our dealer locator, most dealers charge an installation fee of $150 - $200 for labor.

Will Windshield Skin® affect vehicle sensors?

We’ve put extensive effort into developing a material that is optically clear and sensor-safe, ensuring it won’t interfere with the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) or any built-in windshield sensors your vehicle relies on.

Does Windshield Skin® affect visibility?

Windshield Skin® protection is designed to be as transparent as possible. While our Windshield Skin® Super Stretch line is a easy-install product, improper installation can affect visibility. Super Stretch line of material is a top seller and the easiest to install, holding a 99% clarity level.
 

Note that for 100% clarity, we recommend our 1 Layer Peel-Away product line which requires professional installation. It is not a DIY product and requires specialized professional installation experience.

What is the life expectancy of Windshield Skin®?

Windshield Skin is designed to last 1–5 years depending on maintenance, exposure to environmental elements, and driving habits—daily drivers typically see 2–3 years of protection, while "Garage Queen" vehicles can reach up to 5 years. It is noteworthy that the first year of the product's lifespan is backed by the manufacturer through our warranty system.

 

Tip: Use Windshield Skin® Maintenance Wipes to extend product life and ensure to register your product for warranty within 30 days of installation. 
 

For those seeking the longest-lasting material, we recommend exploring our 1 Layer, 2 Layer, or 3 Layer Peel-Away product line. However, it's important to emphasize that professional installation is required for this product line. Please be aware that this product is not intended for DIY installation. Peel- Away product line is reserved for particular accounts with specific requirements. Contact the factory directly for more information and training schedules.

How does it perform with windshield wipers?

While Windshield Skin® is a wearable product and may show light wiper haze over time (years), its built-in hydrophobic properties help minimize wiper use and keep your view clearer for longer. If you notice the hydrophobic effect starting to fade, that’s a great time to use a Windshield Skin® Maintenance Wipe to refresh performance and extend the life of your film. 

How should Windshield Skin® roll material be stored?

We always recommend using medical tape and/or small PPF strips to secure the roll tightly. Store the roll with the provided end caps back into its box horizontally.

 

Using the wrong tape can leave an impression and/or pinch the material. Storing the material vertically allows it to loosen on itself.

What is the cure time for Windshield Skin®?

After installation you may drive your vehicle immediately though you may notice the moisture. Please allow 48-72 hours in direct sunlight for the moisture to fully cure.

What does your warranty cover?

Prorated warranty coverage valid for 1 year from date of installation. Note that the product must be registered for warranty within 30 days of installation. The warranty covers defects in materials and manufacturing against yellowing, bubbling or cracking. This warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, installation issues, accidents, misapplication, normal wear and tear, dents from road debris impact, collisions, and/or intentional damage of any kind. Should I get 8mil or 12mil for my vehicle?

As a general rule of thumb, if maximum protection is your priority, we recommend 12mil. While 8mil is our tried-and-true best seller, it does have its limitations.


If you drive high mileage, own a vehicle with a more vertical windshield (like Jeeps, G-Wagons, Broncos), or drive an off-roader or exotic, 12mil is highly recommended.


Daily drivers can perform well with either option and it up to personal preference.


It is important to note that both 8mil and 12mil offer the same installation process, optical clarity, and warranty coverage. If you need help deciding, give us a call and we are happy to provide our input!

3. Installation Questions

Is Windshield Skin® easy to install?

Windshield Skin® Super Stretch line of protection is designed to be easy to install. You can install yourself or take to a local Authorized Dealer. 

 

Please refer to the Installation Guide when determining whether to install yourself or take to a professional.

 

Professional installation is recommended for Windshield Skin® Peel-Away products.

What is "slip solution" and what is the ratio?

Slip solution is the liquid used through out the entire cleaning and installation process and is a critical part of the installation. As seen in the installation instruction sheet and in installation videos, we recommend the following ingredients in a 32oz spray bottle:

 

• 2 tsp (10ml) of Johnson & Johnson baby wash (J&J baby shampoo is an acceptable alternative)

• Lukewarm water to the top of the spray bottle (distilled water is best for
maximum clarity)

 

*Note that slip solution may vary based on temperature and humidity in your location.

Can Windshield Skin® be applied to any vehicle?

Yes, Windshield Skin® protection can be applied to all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs, semi truck, RV, side by sides, bus transit, motorsports, heavy equipment, sunroofs, moonroofs, side glass and rear glass. 

Can I apply Windshield Skin® over a ceramic coated windshield?

Yes, Windshield Skin can be applied over a ceramic-coated windshield without issue. However, once installed, we do not recommend applying additional coatings or products on top of the Windshield Skin, as this may affect performance and will void the warranty.

Can I ceramic coat over Windshield Skin®?

Windshield Skin is engineered with built-in hydrophobic properties, offering water-repellent performance similar to a ceramic coating. We do not recommend applying third-party products, as unknown chemicals may compromise the film's effectiveness. Please note: using other brands or coatings on Windshield Skin will void the product warranty.

What tips do you have for the installation?

Prep is Everything: Thorough cleaning is the key to a great install. Make sure the windshield is spotless and install indoors in a clean, dust-free environment.

Use Plenty of Slip Solution: You can’t "overwater" during installation—slip solution helps with positioning and prevents premature tack.

Squeegee Smart:

Do at least two full passes with the squeegee.

Overlap your strokes to avoid bubbles and missed spots.

Once you've started squeegeeing, do not lift the material unless absolutely necessary (e.g., to remove a hair or contaminant).

Adhesive Liner: Don’t peel the adhesive liner until you're ready to install.

No Stretching: Windshield Skin is not paint protection film—do not overstretch the material during application.

Why are their moisture pockets after installation?

This is oftentimes caused by not overlapping your strokes during install and/or not squeegeeing over the entire Windshield Skin® at least twice. The second pass through is crucial to ensure all moisture is pulled out of the glass. If you notice a moisture "streak" rather than a bubble, those should dry out within 48-72 hours if the vehicle is left in the sun to dry.

When should I use my Maintenance Wipes?

We recommend using Windshield Skin Maintenance Wipes every 6–8 car washes, or whenever you notice the hydrophobic performance starting to fade. A decrease in water beading is a good indicator that it's time for a refresh.

What do I need to provide for the installation?

We include all essential installation tools with both our Universal and Vehicle-Specific Kits. However, you’ll need to supply the materials for the slip solution: a spray bottle, distilled water, and baby shampoo.

I installed my Windshield Skin®, now what?

Thank you for trusting us to keep you safe on the road! The next step is important—register your product for warranty.
 

Be sure to review the maintenance tips included on your warranty hanger, then scan the QR code and use the roll number found on the hanger to complete your registration within 30 days of installation.

Shipping time varies depending on your location and the shipping method you choose. Note: orders placed by 1:00PM PST will ship same day.

Shipping cost depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. Note: dimensional weight plays a large factor into our shipping costs. While the product itself may weigh 4lbs, it is 48" long, shipped in a 51" x 6" x 6" box.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes, we offer free shipping on orders above $600.
